The Lions | Ernie Sims Transfer To Philadelphia

The Lions | Ernie Sims Transfer To Philadelphia on Trends Hot Topics --- The Lions | Ernie Sims Transfer To Philadelphia. The Lion said " sent linebacker Ernie Sims to Philadelphia as part of a three-team trade". Beside that, The Lions have acquired tight end Tony Scheffler and a seventh-round pick from Denver.

The Lions’ best pick, of course, came in 1989 when they took Barry Sanders with the third overall selection. Two teams picking ahead of the Lions that year still are kicking themselves for not taking Barry.

Other top picks since 1980 who made solid contributions to the Lions include: Billy Sims (1980); Lomas Brown (1985); Herman Moore (1991); Robert Porcher (1992); Johnnie Morton (1994); Luther Elliss (1995); Jeff Backus (2001) and Calvin Johnson (2007).

The jury still is out on last year’s first-round picks — Stafford and tight end Brandon Pettigrew — but early returns from their rookies seasons are promising.

Then there are the Matt Millen years. Sorry to ruin your day, but it is what it is and it’s a big part of the reason the Lions are where they are — picking first or close to first nearly every year.

The Lions’ top picks during the Millen era were, in order: Jeff Backus; Joey Harrington; Charles Rogers; Roy Williams; Mike Williams; Ernie Sims; Calvin Johnson and Gosder Cherilus. Only Johnson has lived up to pre-draft hype. Backus hasn’t been outstanding but has provided longevity, and Sims is adequate.

The Eagles sent a fifth-round pick (137th overall) to Denver. The seventh-rounder the Lions received is the 220th overall pick. They now have four seventh-rounders.

Scheffler, 27, played at Chelsea High and Western Michigan, and when reached by the Denver Post this morning, he answered by saying: “Restore the roar!”

“It’s going to be surreal walking into that locker room and putting on those clothes for the first time,” Scheffler told the Post.

Tight end is a need because Brandon Pettigrew, the No. 20 overall pick last year, is recovering from a torn ACL and Casey Fitzsimmons retired because of concussions.

Scheffler, who has a one-year deal for $1.176 million as a restricted free agent, has spent four years with the Broncos and caught 31 passes for 416 yards and two touchdowns last season.
